Welcome to Lake Tahoe Community College's three main teaching tracks. Whether you teach face-face (F2F, or in a physical, in-person classroom), distance education (DE, or online using our Canvas LMS), or in LTCC Rising Scholars (RSP, formerly called ISP, incarcerated students program, or a from of teaching that includes enhanced correspondence education through the mail and some in-person teaching or tutoring at various correctional institutions), this page has something to offer you. First, you will see some foundations of teaching that are relevant to any form of teaching. As they often say, good teaching is good teaching, no matter the modality. Next, you will get information specific to each modality of teaching. Finally, some additional segments are relevant to all classroom and non-classroom faculty. Included are sections on Students and Professional Development. All of the materials on this page will be updated from time to time, so come back for more! Some of this material is also chunked for you in a more formalized manner in the Onboarding tab of the T&L website. Good luck in your journey at LTCC and let us know if we can be of further assistance. In addition to this page, please be sure to check out all of the useful resources on the Technology page.

Face-to-face (F2F) teaching is the oldest and most traditional form of college instruction. F2F instructors teach in a physical classroom. Sometimes this classroom is a space with tables, chairs, and a whiteboard, while other times, this classroom is a working space, such as a laboratory, art lab, or kitchen in which students learn from our faculty in practical and hands-on senses. Regardless of what your classroom space looks like, we wish you the great successes as you interact with your students here at Lake Tahoe Community College. Please take advantage of this page and the many resources that it provides for F2F instruction.

Hello and welcome to the Distance Education (DE) Track at Lake Tahoe Community College. Historically, the term “Distance Education” has been used to mean a form of education in which the instructor and student are not physically connected as they would be in a face-to-face class. Prior to the age of technology, the Internet, and LMS (Learning Management Systems), some distance education included correspondence education in which instructors and students communicated through written means that was delivered through the mail. Surprisingly, such education can be traced back to the 1850s in Europe. One concern with this form of education is the lack of real-time communication and pedagogical conversation between the instructor and students. We sometimes refer to this sort of education as “asynchronous” as real-time interaction is not present in the teaching process. Since the mid-1980s, we are witness to a new and more interactive form of distance education known as Online Learning. Online learning takes the idea of distance education and improves it by providing more frequent asynchronous communication between instructor and students. As well, due to the advent of the telepresence of video and audio technology, online learning may be offered in a “synchronous” mode in which the instructor and students are able to interact in real-time as they would in a face-to-face class. While some would call our ISP education a form of distance education, for clarity sake, we will refer to distance education as that which only involves online learning.

Beginning in 2019, the CVC-OEI grant provided opportunities for LTCC to improve DE teaching. One of the grant outcomes was the creation of short helpful videos that focused on aspects of DE instruction. The videos were created as "blocks" that could be linked together in terms of topic, content, and approach. Feel free to browse any of the DE Blocks videos. Some are as short as three minutes.

Hello and welcome to the LTCC Rising Scholars Track at Lake Tahoe Community College. Previously, this track was referred to as the Incarcerated Student Program (ISP). The RSP program has grown from a few classes to course offerings in disciplines that include Counseling, English, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, and others. Teaching in the RSP can be very rewarding for faculty members, especially as they are involved in the noble work of improving lives and making possible the desire of ISP students to rejoin society as productive and functioning members and citizens. At the same time, there are challenges to teaching in the program. This particular track will discuss these many areas of the RSP. Please be sure to check out the videos below. The outstanding staff of the RSP office has taken time to explain the ins and outs of the program and offer many tips to faculty so that their teaching experience might be more rewarding. The RSP includes a Steering Committee made up of faculty. In the future, we will be holding teaching workshops for faculty who wish to improve their craft of teaching our RSP students.
